What to check in 2026

Hot water incentives are not one fixed payment available to every household. NSW’s Energy Savings Scheme can support eligible hot water upgrades, while the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme provides small-scale technology certificates for eligible solar water heaters and air-source heat pumps. Check the current rules before committing to a replacement.

NSW upgrade discounts

Eligibility depends on the existing system, proposed replacement and scheme requirements. Ask a participating supplier to assess your particular installation before work begins. Request written confirmation of the discount, required documentation and final customer contribution. Do not assume that a neighbour’s offer or an old advertisement applies to your home.

Federal STCs

Only eligible models and installations qualify for STCs. Certificate entitlement and its financial value are different things: the eventual discount depends on the eligible installation and the arrangement with the supplier or certificate agent. Ask whether you will assign certificate rights and whether the quoted price already includes that discount.

Compare the whole installation

Check the proposed model, tank capacity, cold-weather suitability, warranty and installation scope alongside the incentive. A large advertised discount does not establish that the equipment suits your household. Confirm removal, electrical changes, drainage and commissioning, and ask what happens if an eligibility condition is not met.

Documents and questions

Have the existing unit’s model label, property details and any requested ownership or electricity documents ready. Ask the supplier which scheme supports the offer, who administers the paperwork and which conditions you must satisfy. Keep the written quote, product details and completed installation documents.

Official information

Read the NSW Government hot water upgrade incentive page and the Clean Energy Regulator’s solar water heater and air-source heat pump guidance. This guide was updated on 1 October 2026; offers and eligibility can change. Confirm the current position with the participating supplier before installation.
